Project
Wollongong Hospital’s expanded Emergency Short Stay Area (ESSA) is now fully operational, increasing capacity to provide more timely access to care, and helping improve patient flow through the Emergency Department.
The expanded ESSA has cared for more than 2,000 patients needing short-term admitted care between 4 and 24 hours, with most able to go home safely after their treatment.
The NSW Government has committed $21.9 million to upgrade and expand Wollongong Hospital to respond to the health needs of the growing local community. As part of the suite of upgrades, the Medical Ambulatory Care Unit has been relocated to a newly refurbished space which has enabled the expansion of the Transit Lounge. A new imaging department is also underway and includes an additional MRI and CT scanner closely located to the Emergency Department.
